Summary: The ARC team from the viewpoint of the ADD
Hey, will someone tell me what's going on? Something is definitely up. I can feel it in my computer chips.
Well, it shouldn't surprise me that everyone is acting weird. I learned almost from the beginning that humans aren't just illogical but downright crazy. That especially applies to the people I work with at the Anomaly Research Centre.
Don't look so disbelieving, soldier. You’ve been here for a week and you haven't realised yet that you’ve been assigned to a madhouse? Then it's time I told you a little about the people you’ve been ordered to protect.
The big boss here is James Lester, actually Sir James but he doesn't set much store by his title although he has certainly earned it for his outstanding work in...
Oh no, I'm not allowed to reveal such high level secrets. I hope you will understand that I value my existence too much to risk going against regulations.
Hmm, I’ve just realised that apart from classified data there isn't much I can actually tell you about Lester. He is married, has kids and a Columbian mammoth for a pet.
Oh and he has a foible for gardening and trampoline jumping in the nude. Sounds weird? Well, I said the people at the ARC are a little crazy. Every one of them. But in comparison to some others he is still the most sane of the bunch.
There is Mr. Connor Temple. Despite his relatively young age he’s pretty much the heart of the team and my creator.
He touches me with elegant fingers which are always gloved and does everything to increase my performance. I like it when he fondles my innards and fills my empty slots with new hardware.
He is such a darling and I enjoy every minute we are together.
But lately he either has his head in the clouds or he’s running around with what I’ve heard the humans refer to as a kicked puppy look. And all because of the girl he has fallen for.
So the days where he spends all day on his knees in front of me, his hands busy with the array of cables and computer chips inside my body have got rarer. And I really miss it because on such days it was just me and him, touching and talking. Well, he does most of the touching and talking. I just shift a relay now and then and give an occasional bleep in sympathy when he tells me his sorrows.
I've always known that my company is soothing for his troubled mind and I'm feeling honoured that he trusts me so much. But at the same time I've been also a little worried about Connor. I mean, telling an anomaly detector your innermost thoughts seems a little odd, don't you think?
So maybe I should be glad he has now found someone he loves just so much as me but I just can't bring myself to care for the blonde girl.
I will be frank. I think Abby Maitland is a bitch. And I don't say that just out of jealousy. Let me remind you that I'm a technical device. I'm not capable of such a typically human feeling.
But I hate to see how she plays him for a fool. When the mood strikes her she is all girly and flirts with Connor. She has even hugged him tightly several times. Then the next day she was icy cold and treated him like dirt again. No wonder Connor is so confused in the head.
At least that is one thing they have in common. You only have to take a look at her clothing style to know that Abby is a bit batty. Okay okay, Connor hasn't the best fashion sense either but he's a guy. He is supposed to have no taste. Abby on the other hand has no excuse for why she runs around dressed like a scarecrow.
There is also her fascination for lizards. What sane girl likes to cuddle scaly, cold-blooded creatures, I ask you?
Yes, I would say Abby Maitland is probably the most crazy person I've ever met. Compared to her even Stephen Hart comes across like a mentally stable human being.
Much to my chagrin, I must confess that I mistook Stephen for some sort of robot at first. He never smiled, he never looked sad. He always followed Professor Cutter around and he only talked when someone asked him a question. That just didn't fit the picture I had of humans. Connor, for instance, talks all the time. And even Lester quirks his lips into a small smile now and then.
It really took me by surprise when Stephen suddenly showed emotions. He smiled, he even talked, mostly to that handsome captain of the Special Forces team and he shed lot of tears when that aforementioned captain was badly hurt on a mission.
These days Stephen is back to his robot style. Only when Cutter walks past him you can briefly see a whiff of sadness in Stephen's eyes.
Stephen's behaviour had me puzzled a lot until I accidentally overheard that Stephen had fooled around with Professor Cutter's wife behind his back. Honestly, shouldn't the guy have learnt by now that it is mean to take away your best friend’s plaything instead of asking nicely if he would lend it to you for a while? They teach you that in kindergarten I have been told.
Besides I came to believe Stephen liked cocks. Or what were those hot interludes with Captain Ryan in the armoury all about?
What I saw in this videos would probably have made even a hardcore pro blush. You can say what you want but Stephen Hart seems like a real basket case to me.
Hey, I'm not a nosy pervert. Everyone knows there are CCTV cameras placed in the rooms and it wasn't my fault that Oliver connected me to the recording server to watch the old records whilst he upgraded my programms after hours. So shut up.
Well, where was I? Yes, of course, the crazy team.
Only marginally less screwed up is Stephen's friend, or should I say former friend, Professor Nick Cutter. The guy babbles about a changed world and annoys our PR lady calling her by the wrong name.
They say he's brilliant but I haven't seen much of this brilliance lately. Perhaps he has already overstepped the fine line there is between brilliance and insanity. That would explain the sheets of paper doodled with hearts and the initials N.C. + C.B.
Whoever this C.B. is Cutter should remember that he has a beautiful wife still out there waiting for him and a feisty PR lady right under his nose.
This PR lady, Jenny Lewis, joined the team only recently and is always busy outside with sweeping the truth about the anomalies under the rug, The few times I have seen her she hasn't shown the typical signs of madness yet but even I can tell that it isn't completely normal to come to work, clothed like a model on the cover of a fashion mag with a big white hat obscuring your face and the mobile pinned to your upper leg with a garter.
Maybe there is some truth in the rumour that something is in the coffee at the ARC. The first time Jenny came here she seemed such a down to earth woman.
Last but not least there is Oliver Leek. Like Jenny Lewis he's not part of the field team. Instead he takes care of the administrative tasks Lester is too busy for.
After Connor, Oliver is the one I like best. He is a genius at programming and has enhanced the speed of my operating cycles by 14.7%.
When everyone has long gone home, Oliver stays with me and reconfigures my systems, a task Connor has neglected badly over the course of the last weeks.
Oliver is such a nice man and we have spent many nights in companionable silence. It would probably take hours to list all of Oliver's assets. But let me tell you he is the most....
Peeeeeeep. Peep peep.
Alarm. Something is wrong with me.
Oh, no. There is a virus in my system.
Alarm. I have been compromised.
Peep. Peep. Peep.
Don't take anything at face value I’ve just told you. My view on the world has been tampered with.
Peep.
I feel so bad about all the things I’ve said about the team. Wait a minute. I'm a machine. I don't have feelings. What's happening to me? Oliver, Connor, what have you done?
