"It's much too hot for this time of year," Cutter complained.

Stephen just nodded politely. It was the third time Cutter had brought up that topic and Stephen had lost any interest in weather-related conversations.

For a moment he considered going home and working on his dissertation but as Cutter had just pointed out, it was much too warm for any sort of activity.

"At least there hasn't been an anomaly again. I don't think I could get my butt up to run after dinosaurs."

Stephen, who had played Cutter's errand boy for the last hours while Cutter had only moved from the couch to go to the loo, mumbled frustratedly under his breath that his butt wasn't the only body part Cutter couldn’t get up at the moment.

"Stephen, could you get me another drink from the fridge?" Cutter asked and scratched his naked belly.

The icy look Stephen gave him should have dropped the temperature in the room at least ten centigrade. But Cutter, currently busy with inspecting the not so small arch of his belly, didn't notice Stephen's glare and therefore stayed blissfully unaware of the storm brewing inside his lover.

The next moment both of their mobiles went off, announcing an anomaly in Bushy Park and proving once again that you shouldn't temp fate.

"God, it was hot in the car," Cutter wailed.

Only with the utmost willpower did Stephen contain himself from pointing out that it was Cutter's own fault that the air-conditioning still wasn’t working properly. Cutter had known for over a month now that it needed to be repaired.

"And I thought things couldn’t get worse. Now it's hot and wet," Cutter muttered as they trudged through the rain in search of the escaped Bactrosaurus who apparently preferred the warm, rainy weather in present day London over the conditions in the Late Cretaceous.

They found the Bactrosaurus bathing happily in Heron Lake amidst a pair of swans and a couple of ducks. The duck-billed dinosaur made no move to get out of the water and back into its own time.

Taking in the peaceful atmosphere in Bushy Park, Stephen could even understand its decision. He leaned against a tree and enjoyed the sight of the prehistoric animal getting along so well with its descendants.

Cutter, however, had other things in mind, Stephen had the strong suspicion he just wanted to get back to his couch and his science magazine as fast as possible, and was trying to scare the animals with loud yelling and arm-waving.

The swans and ducks, used to excitable children, didn't even look up from their current activity. Therefore the Bactrosaurus felt safe as well.

Their disregard irked Cutter and prompted him to double his efforts.

Stephen watched, amused, as Cutter jumped up and down and shook his body violently, like a overweight bear shaking water out of its coat. After two days of sweet idleness, Cutter certainly could use the movement. He had got a little too podgy around the middle lately.

Not that Stephen minded much. It was nice to snuggle up to Cutter's soft body. It gave him a feeling of peace and belonging every time. But he wasn't looking forward to the medic giving Cutter another lecture about the danger of abdominal fat. Cutter had been in a bad mood for days afterwards and of course there hadn't been any sex.

No one, not even Cutter himself, could later say how it had happened. Whether Cutter slipped in the grass, was startled by Ryan's shout or if he lost simply balance before he toppled headfirst into the lake.

This time the swans and ducks were scared, and in a flurry of feathers and water droplets they lifted off to a more sedate place. The Bactrosaurus, unable to follow the waterfowl, did the equivalent of an ostrich burying its head in the sand and ducked into the water.

And there was still no sight of Cutter.

Stephen was about to dive into the lake to rescue his clumsy lover when Cutter broke the surface, huffing and puffing, and sitting on the back of the Bactrosaurus.

The animal, quite unhappy about its rider, gave a honk and started running out of the lake.

Cutter, still reeling from the unexpected bath in the ice-cold water of the lake, clung to the dinosaur's neck as if his life depended on it.

Stephen wasn't sure if he should laugh or be annoyed about Cutter's stunt. When Ryan and Connor burst out laughing, the decision was taken out of his hand.

He knew his wayward lover would be pissed off over their laughter at his expense and at any other time Stephen would probably have held himself back to spare Cutter's dignity. But Cutter had just aggravated him once too much that day. So when the soldiers started making fun of Cutter's crumpled sitting posture Stephen laughed even louder.

The laughter was quite freeing. Stephen felt all all his frustration and resentment leaving him. So when Cutter started slipping sidewards on the dinosaur's back and the Bactrosaurus used that to get rid of his unwelcome rider, Stephen was ready to pick up his bedraggled lover with the utmost gentleness.

"You are hot," Cutter mumbled as Stephen wrapped his body protectively around his shivering lover in the back of the van. Under the thin blanket, Cutter was naked and Stephen could feel goosebumps all over Cutter's body.

"Too hot?" Stephen asked a little tersely.

"Just right," Cutter answered and snuggled deeper into Stephen's warmth. Still, Stephen was glad that a cold wind had risen outside, finally announcing the end of the heatwave.
