For me, if it isn't in the books, it isn't canon.

I might have to adopt this stance for my own sanity, though eiher way I'm perturbed that even in hindsight JK doesn't value her women-loving-women fans enough to give us representation, if that makes sense?

re-reading the post, I had missed the bit about the 20th anniversary edition. I thought it was just fancy, I didn't realize there was any new text. Was this info in the story, or in an appendix or something?

I understand your feelings, but doubt that JKR is doing it on purpose. Although that might not be much better.
