A quick search of the interwebs turned up several instances of this quote on different sites, but no context. As such, I can't be certain whether it was intended solely in a literal sense, or if Clemens was using it as an example and a metaphor for a ( Read more... )

Twain was one to stand in parlors and say interesting things. As he was a celebrity in his lifetime, these things ended up in the papers or repeated by people pretty often.
