Firstly, they were not hippies. They were Native Americans.

So I'm back from a week at "scout camp"
it wasnt legit scout camp, because it was actually a leadership training course, but it was as close as I've gotten and will get this summer
As always, it was a blast

as usual, a warning- this is probably just going to be just me babbling about lots of scoutie things in a stream of thought manner, so you dont have to keep reading

so anyway, I got to be assistant senior patrol leader, meaning that since very often the real senior patrol leader (the guy who is supposed to be in charge) wasn't around, i got to run stuff, which is always fun
looking back, im thinking i should have tried to be senior patrol leader, but thats not really important
It was the first one of these courses, called NYLT, put on by our council (the big group that rules over all of MA below the charles but under the national scouting organization thingie)
since it was the first, lots of things didnt quite go right, but nothing went horribly wrong
it mostly meant that we were trying to get everything ready about 5 minutes before it had to be ready, so like i said, not everything quite worked right

lets see..... i'm thinking now i could go through the week and give highlights and stuff.... but as usual im not sure if you want to sit through that, so as usual youre forwarned

We, being staff, had to be there a day earlier than the participants to get things ready, which gave me a chance to get to know a lot of people that i had seen around in scouting but didnt know yet, which is good
so we were there and hanging out on saturday.

Sunday, the participants started showing up. During my NYLT, the staff were like playfully yelling at the participants about things like "THIS IS YOUR BINDER. IT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO YOU THIS WEEK. YOU WILL LOVE IT AND SQUEEZE IT AND NAME IT LARY. HERE YOU GO!" or "THIS IS YOUR OFFICIAL NYLT TEE SHIRTS. THEY ARE THE ONLY SHIRTS YOU SHOULD BE WEARING THIS WEEK, AS THEY WILL BE YOUR CLASS B UNIFORM. MAKE SURE IT GETS WASHED SO THAT YOU DONT STINK!"
so i tried my best to emulate what they did during my part of check in (i handed out the tee shirts and hats) but it was kinda annoying because all the other staff were all serious and stuff
my brother and his ride didnt show up until last, which was kinda nerve racking, but he ended up showing up which was good

and since im giving highlights and dont want to bore you, im going to fast forward to the evening- we had a campfire
i got to be a box theif by trying to seal a box under my shirt and a roller coaster
it was fun

o yea, i got to teach something that day too. I got to teach something almost every day, and since i was ASPL, i was teaching the whole group rather than just a patrol of 5 or 6, which was a very different but rewarding expirence.

so monday was good too
i dont think too much important happened, but as part of the sylibis we had to watch apollo 13
i forgot how good a movie it is

ok- forget this whole day by day thing-just highlights as they pop into my head

the day before we left, i went to the trading post and they had this box of swedish fish. It was about 3 and a half pounds, and they bought it thinking it was in indavidual packages and they could sell it. Thing is, it was one big bag of fish. So i walk in, and im like "i want those swedish fish" so after like 5 minutes of phone calls, they finally manage to get me a price (6.50) so i got to buy 3 1/2 lbs of swedish fish, which was sweet, literally

o, sunday night, one of the staff was eating his taco (we had them make tacos that night) and since it was really greasy, he was eating it on a paper towel. So then he finished eating, but he wanted more, so he ended up trying to eat the paper towel. we have pictures
it was really hilarious

ok, so this highlight thing isnt working for me and probably boring you out of your mind, so im going to stop now
i guess im trying to communicate something that isnt really communicatable- a feeling of belongedness and brotherhood sorta, and well its really nice
i guess a better way to communicate it is through other things
like i guess i made a good impression on the participants when i first "met" them, meaning getting up and saying "hi, im will" and started teaching
they all just really liked me for whatever reason
so wherever i went was smiles and hellos and lots of other nice good happy warm feelings
i mean, even though i didnt know any of their names, though i did know their faces, they all were nice and happy and it was really nice
i guess thats why i've been kinda uncomfortable and bothered since i got back- i donit have that feeling anymore, just my mom being my mom and belmont being belmont and me being me and not doing anything.....
bad will
stop being emo!
*slap*
ok, im better now

anyway, so im done babbling
hope it wasnt too painful

ADDITION:o yea, i forgot
i didnt bring a shaving kit with me, so now i have about a week and a halfs worth of beard on my face- just so y'all know
not sure if im going to keep it or not yet, we'll see
