IDEAS - International Democratic Education Academic Studies

Educational innovativeness from a Democratic point of view

Dear friend,

We invite you to join us and be a part of the creation of a new program to be opened here in Israel, at the end of this coming October 2007, under the supervision of the IDE (Institution of Democratic Education).

A new academic, one year program will be opened for many people like you from all over the world. We call it - IDEAS: International Democratic Education Academic Studies.

IDEAS aims to have a strong international focus. The program is conducted in English and will be held in "Hakibutzim-College" - the biggest teacher's training college in the Israel, where IDE is based.

It is a program that is meant for educators and activists, who seek knowledge and experience of Democratic-Education, and Global Changing Processes. We are looking for open-minded people who are keen to interact with others like them.

The main four topics of the program are:

1. Democratic-Education.

2. Leading Peace-Processes & Sustainability.

3. Educators Communities.

4. Processes of change and enterprise.

The structure of the program

IDEAS is a 3 semesters studying-program which combines three elements that give the program its unique learning process. These three elements are:

  • "Hamama" - A Green-House for revolutionary ideas. It is focused on personal development as an Educator and an Entrepreneur. On the first semester each student goes through a process of internal search, with the aim of bringing up a personal idea that he/she wants to fulfill. The goal is for this idea to bring change to society and the environment. The second semester is focused on researching and learning in the field of the idea. At the last semester, the aim is that each student will come-up with a strategic plan of how to bring into reality his/her idea, after he/she has gained some solid knowledge and tools for fulfilling it. The whole process is reflected on, balanced and maintained by a small group of fellow students led by an advisor.

  • Formal studying in the college's campus - Based on two days a week of courses in classes, run in small study-groups. The courses will cover a wide variety of subjects, such as Principles and History of Democratic Education, Globalization, Western vs. Eastern Culture, How to Enable a Peace Process, Alternative Education Philosophies, How Democratic Education has been implemented in Israel's Schools, Cities and Organizations, How Educational Actions Make Change, and many more.

  • Practical experience and Volunteering - Each student in the program will volunteer and take a part in one of the organizations that the IDE is cooperating with. Once a week students will gain work experience in one of the Democratic schools in Israel. On another day of the week the students will volunteer in an organization that they choose. It could be an organization that promotes and leads peace processes, or it could be an environmental organization, or helping communities around the country which need support.

IDE in cooperation with the Palestinian-Israeli Peace NGO Forum will provide through this program access to Israeli and Palestinian civil society leaders in various fields as well as the opportunity to experience from the grass root level the work of various Peace NGOs to promote a sustainable peace in the region.

The program begins at the end of October 2007. Registration has already begun.

The tuition for the Academic-program is 5,000$, and the living expenses are predicted to be another 5,000$ (US $). Scholarships and Concession are available and all students may apply for them.

At the end of this year each student will receive a document from the College that states which courses were completed during his/her studies.

We encourage early application, as we are launching a free online course as an introduction to the program on June 2007. Anyone who holds an interest in IDEAS is encouraged to register for this course ASAP.

We hope that reading about IDEAS program has inspired you and you are very welcome to contact us for registration or just to ask for more details.
