Do I look ecstatic? Yes, yes I am.
Yes, that is me. HOLDING CHIBI, THE LEAD SINGER FROM THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE.
I can't begin to thank
silfur enough for taking me to the MSI/TBM concert. And then he even bought me a CD so I could get it signed by Chibi. <3 HE IS THE BEST, I TELL YOU.
We got there before the first band went on, so we circulated a bit. There was this really hot twosome, a male and a female, both all synth-haired and industrial-looking, and
silfur and I decided that clearly she should be mine and he should be his, LOL. So we wandered over and she and I gave each other mutual hair-adoration and discussed synth hair, and then just before we left I leaned over and murmured in her ear, "I think you and your friend are both really hot, but you even moreso." I stood back up and she grinned and thanked me and I said, "Maybe we'll see you inside," and we smiled at each other again and then we walked away. And I felt all pimp for having the courage to do that, LOL. (What can I say, people with vaginas still intimidate me a bit.)
We went back into the main hall, Silfur bought a tshirt, and then the lights dropped. The first band was
Fake Shark Real Zombie. The music was good but the lead singer came out in this dress that did not flatter him at all (this becomes important later). I enjoyed the set despite the distraction of the not-so-good dress though. ;) It was obvious that they didn't take themselves seriously (in a good way - they took their music seriously, but at the same time they were being a little silly onstage, which is always a good thing since musicians who take themselves super-seriously come across as fucking annoying and egotistical).
Then there was a break between them and The Birthday Massacre, which was fun because the crowd started chanting "MSI! MSI!" and then another part of the crowd started chanting "TBM! TBM!" Heh. It was obvious who was there for MSI and who was there for TBM. ;) And then they started chanting "Chi-bi!" - needless to say, I was totally in on that chant. ;)
TBM took the stage and I think I watched Chibi every second she was onstage - she is fun to watch because she's a total rockstar, all hand gestures and facial expressions and playing with the songs. And she sang both "Happy Birthday" and "Lover's End", which are the two Birthday Massacre songs on my TCB playlist. ;) Their set was completely awesome.
At the end of their set I went to the back of the room where the merchandise tables were because one of the band members was there selling merch, and I asked him if there was any way I could get a picture with Chibi because it had been my birthday a week ago and I'm such an uber-fan and... (okay, IIRC, how it really went was
silfur and I talking to him, and Silfur says, "So who in the band do I have to blow for my friend here to get a picture with Chibi?" and the guy told us the band usually shows up in the crowd during MSI's set, and then Silfur says something like, "So who can I blow just to blow them?" and we all laughed.)
I also happened to see the lead singer from Fake Shark Real Zombie, Kev, and we had a conversation that went like this:
Me: I really enjoyed the set, but I am just itching to put you in a dress that would flatter you.
Kev: *laughing*
Me: No, seriously! You would look good in velvet. You could totally pull off something in dark velvet.
Kev: Well, I had this grand plan tonight to look like Courteney Love, but I couldn't find anything appropriate at the Salvation Army thrift store and...
Me: Oh, honey, no. *patting him on the shoulder* We can find you a better role model than that.
We then bonded over discussing dresses, Toronto's Queen St W shopping district, my mission to meet Chibi, and his history of being an MSI fan. He was a total darling and something about him brought out the mother hen in me - maybe it was the "sweet young boy" vibe he had going on.
So MSI took the stage and I lurked back-room near the merch table through the entirety of MSI's set, not wanting to miss Chibi if she showed up. But I was able to see the stage pretty well, and I could hear it fine, and I must say I was happy about that since MSI are a blast and a half to watch. The lead singer,
Jimmy Urine, is a true showman. He was all over the stage, insulting the audience and taking off clothes (oh yes, he got down to his boxers and then asked the audience to dress him, which resulted in audience members throwing various clothing items onstage and him singing a song while wearing a denim skirt, a orange construction-worker vest, a black sweater tied GQ-style around his shoulders, and a tie). He finished the set with a rousing drag-queen-style lip-synch to "There's No Business Like Show Business" (sung by Ethel Merman), complete with rather impressive baton-twirling. Like I said - he's a showman.
During the MSI set,
silfur spotted TBM's keyboardist walking around and went up to him and told him how awesome TBM was and shook his hand. The keyboardist took Silfur's hand in a very dainty, timid goth-boy way (he was skeeved out by Silfur's sweaty hand, LOL - Silfur apologized for the sweatiness of his hand), and then as soon as the keyboardist thought Silfur wasn't looking, he wiped his hand off on his friend's shirt. Silfur and I about peed ourselves laughing over him getting dissed by the keyboardist. ;)
Sadly, by the time the MSI set ended, Chibi had still not shown up. I was rather bummed about that and was still lurking near the merch table when I felt someone tap me on the shoulder. It was Kev (the lead singer from Fake Shark Real Zombie) and when I turned to look at him, he pointed behind me. And there - there was CHIBI!
It went basically like this:
Me: *like a complete moron* I am such a huge fan and when you played in Toronto two years ago at the Opera House I was the coat-check girl and I heard your music and I totally fell in love immediately and I've been such a huge fan ever since.
Chibi: That's so awesome! *big grin* So you're in Vancouver now?
Me: No I still live in TO but I happened to be on vacation in Vancouver and it was my birthday a few days ago and my friend told me, "TBM are playing and I'm going to take you for your birthday," and I was so excited and all I really wanted was to get a picture with you and can I get a picture with you?
Chibi: Sure!
Me: I wiped off so I wouldn't be all gross. [everyone was sweaty]
Chibi: *laughs* Well, I haven't.
Me: That's okay, you're Chibi.
*we hug for photo*
Me: Okay this is going to sound stupid but can I get a photo hugging your legs?
Chibi: *laughs* Sure.
*we take second photo*
Me: That is going to be the most awesome fan photo ever THANK YOU.
Chibi: *is sweet and awesome and signs my cd cover*
And then I was all endorphin-high and spent the next twenty minutes or so randomly jumping up and down, clapping, hugging myself, or squeeing out loud.
Yes, even Robin Frolic can get starstruck.
IT WAS AWESOME.
