Excerpt of my NaNo (title: The Pros and Cons of Breathing)

Nov 05, 2007 14:36

Disclaimer: The entire idea behind NaNo is to turn off the internal editor, so keep that in mind! I had no idea where I was going with this, so the sort of metaphysical twist was not exactly expected, but it doesn't surprise me much. I'm avoiding thinking about work. Because if I thought about work, I'd have to think about the fact that my current project is beyond my technical abilities. I'm supposed to be investigating the viability of using structured FrameMaker for XML authoring instead of using ArborText like the rest of the company. However, it doesn't do what I want it to do. I can't figure out a way to make it do what I want it to do. And my boss has already told me that he assumes it won't work, so it has that whole air of fruitlessness to it. I've already told him that it won't work, based just on the planning and research, but he wants me to produce something (even a crappy something) so we can compare the two tools and show his boss.

So reading a great beginning to your NaNo (and contemplating kitchen design) was just the kind of break that I needed.

Well yay, then, happy to have helped.

Wow, yourself! Thanks Lisa, that means a lot to me. And you can certainly read it when I'm done. It will be 50,000 disjointed words, but if all goes well, I'll want to edit it into something vaguely resembling a publishable novel. In that event, I'll be seeking feedback about what works and what doesn't.

The tone is already shifting a bit in some of the subsequent sections: a little satirical, a bit fantastical, and who knows what else is coming down the pipeline! It's quite a ride...
