Having some experience in this area, my question is not Why? Rather, it's What's all the fuss about? People are way too squicked about this.
About this case specifically: the horse in question was mounting the man. It seems more like human abuse than animal abuse.

I just saw a comment on a post on my flist about this - someone was all upset about the treatment of the horse. Meh.

If a dog starts humping your leg and you let him finish, is that lewd?

The treatment of the horse? I don't know the full story, but I know that the sex, at least, wasn't what was bothering him.

It might be rude, depending on your company, to let the dog go to town. If no one's around, though, he might appreciate it if you give his knot a good squeeze.
