Think about that subject line.  "We hold these truths to be self-evident..."  What does that MEAN?

It means that it should be common sense.  That the Declaration of Independence is something that should strike the "common man" as the nature of how things should be for all people.

So, assume the word 'man' in the following context refers to both

It was something like 1% of the actual population that fought and won the war and we've managed to piss away everything they did in under 250 years. Pretty impressive in a totally depressing way.
