Corn Syrup

The over-abundance of corn syrup in American food has been getting on my nerves lately. It wasn't until I started paying more attention to food labels that I realized how much stuff it's in.

And then my recent trip to Japan made me realize how good food can be without it. So I think I might try a No Corn Syrup Diet. Not religiously, but we'll see ( Read more... )

hi!
i don't follow anything specific, however i consume as little HFCS as possible - with the occasional exception of heinz ketchup (the ketchup thing is HARD) and reeses peanut butter cups. the majority of the time it's not hard. if you have a healthier type food store around you (trader joe's, whole foods, your local co-op) it makes it at lot easier, as most smaller stores totally eschew hfcs, and the bigger chains tend to keep it almost completely out (in the case of whole foods, they do have heinz on the shelf)
restauranting can be a little tough because who's to say what's in those rich sauces and dressings, but i tend to not be too concerned while eating out, because i do it so little.

Aww man. I was hoping Reeses didn't have HFCS - I haven't checked yet. I already do much of my shopping at Whole Food's and TJ's, so that should make things easier. I am kind of assuming most restaurants (at least the non-chain restaurants) would not use HFCS in their cooking, but maybe I'm wrong about that.

Try the TJ's organic ketchup - I bet there's no corn syrup in it.

Yes, now imagine being diabetic and having to avoid corn syrup. I eat hardly any pre-processed food anymore...the stuff's in EVERYTHING.

Heinz Organic is almost the same as normal, but has cane sugar. I can't stand other brands of ketchup, myself.

Having read _Good Calories, Bad Calories_, I'm less convinced that HFCS is any worse than sucrose, however, I think the quantity which we consume is the issue.

Yeah, I agree with that. But my thinking is if I eliminate it, I'll be eliminated overly processed foods at the same time, and I think that's a big problem with the American diet.
