Blog: Recalling Characters

Yep. Still feeling editing anxieties. Now though, they have manifested themselves in a deep and horrifying panic about characters and getting back to the place I will need to get to if I'm going to be spending time with them and tinkering with them to make them better. This is not a new fear for me, especially for this particular story ( Read more... )

Wow! See, this is what amazes me and frightens me about writing. It must be an all-consuming experience to develop such a relationship with these characters. The best I can relate to what you're going through is when I go back and read some of my old research (or read my manuscript drafts in light of reviewer feedback). The holes and flaws become so glaringly painful!

I wish I could write fanfic of my crappy research. That might be fun, so my vote is for Fanfic!

Haha, actually, for a class I took on the Harlem Renaissance I did that! Researched the hell out of certain people and place so it did feel like a bit of fanfic of my research... and RPF to boot. :))

I think they are all brilliant ideas apart from the freaking out but, as you say, that'll probably happen anyway so why not embrace it ( ... )

So my less than helpful advice is to do all of the above plus the read-through you're avoiding!

Ha, this gave me a brilliant idea actually. On my Kindle touch it is possible to send myself a PDF and it's also possible to have either a creepy male or female highly digitized voice (I'm sure they're working out kinks and the voices will get better, now, they're just strange) read to you. So I think I'll do that. For funsies! And so I can see how bad it might be (or good, I'll concede that it might not ALL suck) but not take it too seriously.

If it's a really hilarious experiment maybe I'll do a voice post. :))
