The wave of criticisms against the fatwa has put clerics on a collision course with intellectuals and artists, who say that such edicts only reinforce claims -- particularly in the West -- that Islam is against progress.

Against progress? How about against *civilization*? Human dignity??

Hey, if the Taliban decided to destroy statues in Afghanistan, this wouldn't be too far away. Morons.

The lack of logic is breaking my brain. It's only idolatry if you worship them. If you are Muslim, then you wouldn't be worshipping a statue of Bast or whoever, right? *eyeroll* Art, people!

(Side note on idols: I've always wondered how those statues of the Virgin Mary in some Catholics' homes wouldn't be considered idols.)

Also, this makes me want to go out and buy a few pretty statues. For the historical and artistic value of them.

I could get you something small as a wedding present?

Only if it wouldn't put you too short of money. But that would be nice. You know what you're looking at better than I do. I just see them and go "Ooo, pretty!" Jeff had to tear me away from the statues in the gift shop at the Smithsonian (whose Ancient Egypt section is sadly, rather small).
