Angel watched the Los Angeles skyline from his penthouse apartment in the Wolfram & Hart building. He took a sip from his glass of imported liquor and pondered on his life. He’d lived 200+ years. Traveled with Darla, made good on what he told Spike and shared the hunt with him, played with Drusilla when it suited him, fell in love with a Slayer nearly 9 generations younger than him, and dated a werewolf who was around Buffy’s age.

He’d lived in some of the worst places and eaten the vilest things to survive. He had touched base with each of them through the years in passing. Darla in China, Spike on the German sub during the war, Drusilla in Sunnydale. His soul could handle them one-on-one. But, when they were all together in China, he felt himself get sucked back into the art of destruction so easily. It was his proudest and most painful moment to witness when Spike and Drusilla came up and told him that he had killed his first Slayer. Angel was even in New York in the 1970s and watched from the shadows as Spike fought his second Slayer on the bridge. Spike didn’t know that though. No one did.

Throughout his existence he had lived in middle class homes, the best hotels, the most squalid places, art deco basement apartments, abandoned buildings, and the third floor of a hotel haunted by a paranoia demon for 50 years. He’d dreamed dreams that would have his friends ready to stake him. He’d had used his reprieve from Hell to do something good and fight evil. Found out that his childe fought for his soul, for love. He had heard that his childe had perished while closing the Hellmouth. He’d grieved for Spike for those 19 days. Then, he had watched that same childe materialize from the amulet he had given to Buffy. Eve and the Senior Partners made him think that he could wield the company to do some good. And what had it all gotten him? A 30th floor office with a penthouse suite and necro-tempered glass so that he wouldn’t dust unless the Senior Partners wanted him to.

Was Spike right? Had he sold himself to the Devil in order to fight Him from within? Fred was still working on a way to make his childe corporeal again. There are times when he missed the companionship. But, then when Spike was around he made his mission to aggravate Angel. Just then, said nuisance flickered beside him.

“Nice night,” Spike said.

“Yep,” Angel agreed.

“It’s the kind of night to go hunting with a companion,” Spike observed.

“Yep,” Angel agreed.

“Don’t know how you survived this long with no companion. I spent four years in Sunnydale around Buffy and the Scoobies and I was still lonely. It’s nice to have someone around again who knows you,” Spike said.

Angel swallowed the last of the liquor, “Yeah.”

Both men stared out the window and watched the sun come up, each alone in their own thoughts, but together and amicably silent.
