starting to put the pieces together, albeit out of order

It is so hard to start writing about the Western Balkans trip. I want to recount every minute of every day, but I also want to focus on those events that had the biggest impact on me. So I'm going to try and ... I don't know. Let's see where this goes.

After a 13 hour train ride, the story begins )

travel stories, balkans, pictures, sarajevo

This was a great post. Tami, you're such an interesting person. I love hearing your stories.

When you said all the pictures on the wall were Tito, I noticed it was some guy. Who is this Tito man? Is he the country's leader? Or is he some type of hero?

Because my first guess would have been Michael Jackson's brother.

He was the communist "leader" (dictator, to some) of Yugoslavia from WW2 until he died in the 1980s, Wikipedia aritcle here.

He did some good stuff (from what I know, very anti-Nazi and anti-facist back in the 1940s) and some bad stuff (the whole claiming himself "President for Life") but a lot of people remember him as a hero because Yugoslavia had a pretty high standard of living compared to other communist countries (ie, they were free to travel to Western Europe) and he promoted unity in one of the most ethnically diverse areas of the world.

that's incredibly flattering, though I think I'm one of the seven million "travelers" out there writing about my adventures, and for now, it contents me to know there's a few people on the internet that care about my stories. :)
