You have a MacBook, right? I'm not sure how cheap it is, but the folks at the Apple Store can transfer information off of your old hard drive into your new (or slightly new) Mac.

Um, not exactly....

I have a 3-year-old dell laptop

... my mac (powerbook G4) is owned by my company, over four years old, and still in perfect working condition. so that isn't the issue, it's my older personal computer.

I...don't pay attention.

I thought the Mac you talked about before was yours. My brother just bought one and had the information (documents, music, pictures, etc.) transferred from his old PC to the new Mac.

I would get an external enclosure such as:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817155002

you can remove your hard drive and put it in the enclosure, which will turn it into an external drive. Plug that drive into another computer and get to your data. I am not 100% sure a mac will recognize your windows hard drive, but i suspect it will at least be able to read it.

I love the idea of that - it's cheap and easy - but the USB ports on the old Dell aren't working.

Take the hard drive from the Dell and put that in the enclosure. Than plug the enclosure into the Vaio.

i helped PK's sis with a similar problem.
I can pop the HD out of the old machine, and transfer the data to a DVD and/or your other machine(s).

woah, really? do you need one of these external enclosure things? I'm thinking I may go buy one at best buy today and try and get this shit done... this has been the bane of my existence for months. All my website backup and this freelance project I've been working on is on the dell and it's driving me crazy not being able to get at it.

if you are thinking of buying the enclosure, go for it. you can then keep the extra had drive as a way to make backups. i can still help you out with it.

it would be cheaper to buy one online, but that takes time, and if you wanna do this _now_ i totally understand the "go and get 'em" mentality.

if/when you go to best buy, be sure you specify that you need an enclosure for a laptop HD - if the dell is that old, it is probably NOT a SATA drive, but rather micro ide (2.5 inch).

i have an enclosure of my own i can use to make the transfer. so you don't _have_ to buy one to get the data off the machine. if you want to keep using the extra hd as a backup, you do need to buy an enclosure.
