Just a few short additions to the book list- I've been watching shows and reading fanfic a lot as a result, so the book reading has taken a side path. I also suspect there was at least one other book in here, read while I was up at my folks' place, but I didn't write it down and it didn't make much of an impact. Oh well.)

I adore The Checklist Manifesto. That was a seriously thought-provoking book.

Gawande has a remarkable ability to convey complicated concepts in a clear way- he doesn't talk down and he doesn't oversimplify either. He takes the reader along on his own path of discovery, which gives it the charm of storytelling, but it's also brilliantly informative and includes studies, evidence, and history enough to take it well out of the realm of anecdata and into some of the best informational writing I've seen.

What impressed me most was his relentless logic, building those many separate stories into one undeniable set of proofs. And then equally logically pointing out the obstacles and how to overcome them. At the end, you can't go "but that just works for... " because he's essentially retold the same story, calmly and thoroughly, over and over and over.
