Different disciplines go about their theories in different ways. How is one approach more truthful than the other?

right, that's the point of philosophy (sometimes), to see if it can make this distinction.
a new view i just learned about in my phil sci class is post modernism, which takes the view that different disciplines aren't better than each other, just different. god as an explanation for the universe carries the same weight and value as a scientific explanation.

I suggest a look at Albert Einstein's religious views, you might take a liking to them.
