There's a great crime saga movie called Heat, in which a cop played by Al Pacino is explaining why he bottles up all the terrible things he sees on the job.
"I gotta hold on to my angst. I preserve it because I need it. It keeps me sharp, on the edge, where I gotta be."
I think there's a lot of truth to the sentiment. Comfortable people rarely have the drive to better themselves in worldly ways (street intellectualism, productivity) and instead seem to wallow in their own physical hedonism.
