Whack scale

I thought up a 5-point scale for when a book/movie/etc has brain-hurtingly-bad science, plot holes you could drive a semi through, and so forth. It's the head-whack scale. Basically, how many times you'd need to be whacked on the head in order to find it plausible. 1 whack for "only an expert would be bothered", 5 whacks for "you'd need to be ( Read more... )

Any movie with explosions/talking/anything audible in the vacuum of space. I'll say 3.5 for most people, 5 for myself and fellow geeks.

Eh, I'd say it depends on whether they handwave it somehow or not. There are a few semiplausible handwaves, at least for explosions.

also, I'm kind of aiming for "how low would your IQ need to get in order to find this plausible" (or at least a crude measure thereof)... 5 whacks would be reserved more for something like, oh, someone wandering around completely unprotected in the vacuum of space without being harmed. Mere sound in space, you just need to not realize that sound needs a medium to travel in.

I suppose the specific scene in mind is Superman IV. Well less scene and more large portion of the movie.
