Well, I think eventually you'd realize that you weren't dreaming, out of sheer timespan if nothing else, right? I mean, even dreams that seem really long take place over no more than a few days, usually.
But, in any given moment, would I be able to ask myself, "Am I dreaming?" and generate an account of my recent activities that would convince me that I was not? Many of my dreams come with backstories; the presence of a backstory does not rule out me dreaming.
In a Magical World, I might have enough telepathy/empathy/out-of-body-experience power to not be limited to strict first-person perspective, which is one of my main tells for "I am not dreaming".
That does rather depend on the world one ends up in. Maybe it would be more interesting =in good ways= than this one. If so, I'd likely try setting up a "normal" (snickers) life there, if possible. If that world ends up being far less likable than this one, I might well seek to find a way back, if I could. Pretty sure that "being a hero" is most certainly NOT on my list. Becoming a hero is more... I took a stand on something and a lot of others took notice and respected me for it, rather than something I sought out.
I suppose I should start off...tamtribleApril 17 2011, 12:38:56 UTC
I think I'd get over the "this can't be real" *fairly* quickly, once I've run a few basic tests. If nothing else, it doesn't seem very sensible to assume that where I am *isn't* real, if I can get harmed if I'm incorrect in that assumption.
Once I did so, I think (or at least I hope) I'd try to be A Hero. But a smart one, not a charging-headlong-into-danger type.
I think we've all watched a movie character go down the rabbit hole and take forever to catch on. We've watched George Bailey bounce all around Pottersville begging people to remember him, and congratulated ourselves for being able to figure it out faster than he did. But if you're living it, then who knows how long it would take your brain to adapt to the new circumstances.
To illustrate this point, remember the last time your Internet was down, and told yourself "I'd better do something else, then. How about Facebook?" Or when the power goes out, you try the TV, then the computer, then the light switches, then the TV again, then throw something in the microwave, then try the light switches again...
