From minotaurs:

Spain passes gay marriage law -- dunno if it's graven in stone yet or not, though. Apparently, this has to get pushed through a bit more before it becomes the law of the land ( Read more... )

You know, when I read "Spain passes gay marriage law", it didn't initially occur to me that it could be a law ALLOWING us to marry, because when we pass "gay marriage" ANYTHING here in the States, it's designed to keep the feelthy feeelthy queers in our place.

Damn, that's the same thing I thought initially. I had to go back and do a double-take to see that minotaurs was happy about the article, then I clicked.

I read about them preparing for that a couple months ago. JPII was all up in arms that it would release "a virus into society" (worse than AIDS, I gather he thought). But apparently the Church was forced to shut up about it because Spain brings in a great deal of money for the Church.

There was a survey done in France where some 70-something percent of parents said that had no problems with their child being gay. Here in this country we had almost half our population against repealing those sodomy laws. Completely disgusting, isn't it? People fail to realize that you cannot have a free society if you are not free to marry as you choose. I cannot believe that stopping such a basic human right has become a mainstream political issue. It's absurd, but our country is absurd.

Thank God I live in the Bay Area.

I'm also glad to live in relatively sensible California, but even here, prop 22 still passed. And I'd wager we haven't got anything NEAR 70% approval of gay marriage statewide.

And this is the best the US can do!

I heard about that -- heartening that it wasn't in response to a court case, too. They just decided to do it.

Just friended you a few days ago, wanted to say hello. :-)

Sometimes I don't think people outside this country really get how backwards it is. We've got the cool technology and the most money and power and all those freeways and TV shows, so we can't actually be that much like the Taliban, can we? We can, and we are.

We are a nation that put Ann Coulter on the cover of TIME as someone to emulate. This says something about us, and it ain't good.

Of course, TIME magazine also named Hitler Man of the Year in the 1930s, so they're not exactly exemplars of sound moral judgment. :/
