Ptolemy and other (potentially misspelled) friends

The Earth, though it may be moving in an elliptical orbit with the sun at one of the foci, and though it may also be rotating around its own axis, must nontheless be flat. Otherwise, why is it that I can see Orion in both the Southern and Norhtern hemispheres, but for the life of me cannot locate the Southern Cross, even with a compass?
