Watchmen

Someone at work decided we should have a wall of staff picks. The kind of thing where we pick books and give a little blurb about why they are so awesome. I'm proud to say that yours truly has sold 10 copies of Watchmen in two weeks. It is the best-selling book on the wall. Because I am awesome. However, I have some stiff competition coming ( Read more... )

You got the advantage because of the movie. AbUse it!

HP con is done. So, when you free to go to the mall? The 23rd? I gotta get together money depending on when we go. And I've been so bad with my table learning. I've slacked off and only yesterday memorized the H- line.

This is fascinating. I've seen books marked as "staff picks" before, but I've never heard any explanation as to whether marking a book as a "staff pick" increased sales and, if so, how much. So three non-bestsellers that are staff picks have sold between 7 and 10 copies each in 14 days? I'm not an expert in book selling, but that sounds good.

*calculates that if 100 stores chose Book A as a staff pick for 2 weeks, Book A would sell an additional 850 copies in those 2 weeks; with 50 states, that would average merely 2 stores per state--not an excessive prediction of what actual bookstores might do*

*understands better why publishers pay for front table space in bookstores*

We're just a small independent store. So we don't get paid to put certain stuff up front, mostly because we don't want to do that. We're also in a big outdoor, "outlet" mall (even though some of the stores are not outlet stores). A lot of our heavy traffic (besides what we'll see for Christmas) is right now. I think the wall is working so well because people want to know why a book is "good". We've got a big, dedicated customer base and we've got a lot of employees that have been there for 3+ years, so those customers know are names and can put a face to that name. We get a lot of out-of-towners that come to us and like that extra personal touch that comes in someone recommending a book, even if the person isn't actually there to recommend it.

That's what I think anyways. :D
