The job fair was cool, but when they finally called me back with an offer, the big giant construction company low-balled me! I know the economy is bad, but the offer just is terrible. I'm not greedy, but even I know when I'm being taken for a ride ;) The guy on the phone wasn't a very good negotiator, and he kept saying things he probably shouldn't ( Read more... )

I would also like to point out that when I had an internship with another huge construction company back in college, they also were low-balling people.

Large corporations have this mentality that they can use their size and influence to low-ball people and hire for less on account of their "other" qualities. I understand that, but they often take it to the extreme. Fluor is a great company, don't get me wrong, but I don't think it is what I am looking for. I would also have to move constantly.

Even I know this pathetic little tactic and I am 5000 miles away. :)
I also really liked the sound of that railroad job the first time you mentioned it to me.

Money isn't everything about a job. But being treated fairly is.

We'll heres the thing. They are NOT a bad company.. but they are treating it from the wrong direction. The big company hires large amounts of people, and they are all treated the same. The railroad company realized that I'm not typical, and they took the extra steps to talk with me a bit more and get to know me a bit more and then made a more "unique" offer. does that make sense?

Of course that makes sense. That is the classic difference between "being a tiny gear in a huge, but well oiled machine" and "being one of the four wheels of a small car." I'm part of a latter system with few people in my job. Both have their advantages. :)
