The plight of bettas in petshops irks me no end. Over the last 5 years Jon & I have had a variety of fish. It boggles my brain that bettas can live without "bubblers", i.e., those things that replenish oxygen in the water. In a rice paddie aquatic plants (like rice, duh) are nature's non-bubbling bubblers. That being said, I don't know anyone who has managed to keep a betta alive any longer than a year, or a year and a half tops.

We have fish over five years old. :D

My betta has no aeration, currents really bother him where he's a slow swimmer but I do a water change every week.

Obviously I know nothing about bettas. Heh...

See, with our fish, if we did a complete water change we'd end up killing them. We've got a lovely healthy bacteria stew going on in there. We do a 30-50% water change every couple of weeks. :D

Oh, I only do maybe a 20% water change. Not the whole tank.
