I know this has sort of been said before on other peoples LJs, but it's got me mad enough to post my own rant, and it's a biggie ( Read more... )

*applauds* -I've been passing comment about the way this actually offended me first time I read it, simply for the way it implies that ALL men are hormonal ridden horribles and therefore need to be told now, incase, because they will do otherwise, because they already do and we let them and... and about how some have jumped on this as a bandwagon to slag blokes off, letting the original points slip by.

You just put that in a much better way than I would have if I had... I'd have probably have gone down the route of paraphrasing with some of the awful things some women do to men, which whilst I think can be equally emotive and horrible, would be missing the actual point somewhat.

I know there are some nasty people out there(male and female), some of the statistics listing in my earlier post(originally about misrepresentation of black metal) are very scary indeed ( ... )

Home Office statistics say false reports of rape are about on a par with false reports of other crimes.
Statistics also estimate that only one fifth of rapes are reported.

If you are raped, go to the police ASAP, get DNA, make a statement, press charges, stand your ground in court.

And face accusations of being lying for money or revenge. Have it implied that you're a slut. Be told it was your fault for wearing a short skirt. Have it said you led him on. You'd been drinking, what did you expect? You're ruining a man's life by saying this. You shouldn't have walked home alone. You've cheated on your husband by doing this. You're dirty now, a ecent man wouldn't want you. It was your fault.
These are the attitudes a raped woman faces. These are the attitudes this meme is trying to challenge.

I know, but not doing it is perpetuating the situation.

And if women don't start digging their heals in and saying 'I won't let this man walk free without a fight' the situation is only going to get worse.

The point of the meme is not to advise women, its to point out where culpability lies. If a woman is a victim of rape, it's the fault of the man who committed the crime, period. Women shouldn't be being told that it was their own fault for the way they dress, travel or drink.

I'm just concirned that important issues in this meme are being lumped together with misrepresentations.

I feel it's likely to have the opposite effect of it's intention, and worry that it does spread a message to women that they don't need to take steps to make themselves safer.

Generally speaking most of the shouting about rape is done at men who wouldn't rape someone anyways. The type who would would ignore such stuff and take no interest in the opinions or the places they are aired.

That's what worries me. Those that'll read it are almost certain to not think that way anyways, but the women that read it may well take it to heart and not take precautions to put themselves at less risk.

The point of this meme is to emphasize the responsibility of rape lies on the rapist. The responsibility for any crime lies on the criminal, and it's usually only with rape that people make the cruel mistake of blaming the victim.

Don't tell your women friends how to be safe and avoid rape.
DOWNRIGHT LIE!! EVERYONE should know how to make themselves safe, and defend themselves. Tell the world!!!I think you may be missing the point slightly. There is no way to be safe, and implying that there are ways to be safe, through dress, attitude, or training, is a lie. Simple as that. If someone tells you 'this is how to be safe from rape' they are lying ( ... )

Example - Condoms aren't safe, but they are safer.
Taking precautions to reduce your risk, not just of rape, but mugging, assault ect, is very important. It won't stop you getting raped, but it will reduce the likelyhood of it happening, just like putting your mobile in your bag won't stop somone from nicking it, but reduce the chances of it happening.

I said at the start I never blame a woman for being raped.
In a perfect world we could all do what we want, wear what we want, get as drunk as we want and know that we'll be safe, but this just isn't the case, and suggesting it's OK to act like that is foolish and quite dangerous.

The peadophile thing is my feeling that adults have an understanding of sex, rape, and that some people can be very cruel just becuse they want to. Children learn these things as they grow up, to force rape on someone that dosen't even understand what's being done to them is even cruel and evil IMHO.

'safe' and 'safer' is a fine distinction, but it's one that should be made, both with rape and condoms.

Well, I think it's pretty cruel and evil to force rape on anyone, whether they understand it or not.

I was trying to say that I think all rape is cruel, but that I feel it is even crueler to inflict it on someone that doesn't even uderstand what's going on, or even that it's wrong.
