First, the portrait.
Since KS bising-ed about not leaving any white, I resolve to airbrush the bottom layer
BUT
When the internal hose of the compressor exploded with a whoosh, there was 1/10 left to airbrush, and since the compressor broke and there's no air pressure, I had to paint that 1/10 @ the bottom-right corner to cover up the left-out-airbrush.
For this work, the texture in the background failed because I reacted a bit too slow in removing the wet layer above to reveal the lighter layer beneath --- the upper red layer dried up faster than I could reach for the tissue owO;;;;;
This portrait was handed this up 2 weeks ago, but coz' KS didn't come last week, he came this week to crit
And he pointed out several of my mistakes, as shown here:
LEFT - he said the finger outline too thick, should have been thinner (wah liu, he remembered my reference damn well...)
RIGHT - the shoulder line too straight/stiff. In other words, my composition wasn't good, and more should have been done for this part e.g. fading, texture, etc.
LEFT - the hand is not nice (as KS puts it). I dunno if he meant the rendering style or the colours, but I do know the ref had a hairy hand, and I figured to make it less hairy. Maybe shoulda omitted all the hair..
RIGHT - cigarette smoke not natural enough. This, is my fault for not digging a reference for it.
Overall, since it was the first piece and I had trouble with the airbrush, I didn't expect a better grade (got a C+ for this)
Also, my composition got thrown out, and the strokes weren't as consistent as I wanted them to be, so,
I'm thinking to go a bit slower for the colour pencil part for the 2nd piece:
This is due on the week after CNY (which meant, I have 1 more week to work on this before I balik kampung)
Haven't added in the specular highlights @ the headlights and booth, coz I just got back the compressor today from VisionArt,
And there were several issues pointed out by Ivan:
1) not dark enough @ missing shadows. I had initially thought the ground/shadow beneath the car was dark enough but after laying on the colour pencils, turned out it wasn't dark enough. Gonna add one-two shades more for this, and gonna make it purple (for the colour changes)
2) background needs touch up. BUT it cannot be too stiff / over-watermarked, coz supposed to show the depth + motion (since it's a moving/speeding car).
3) strokes too much until too soft --- he'd recommend sharpening the pencils till it's real sharp to do the tiny detailing. Did some over a coupla places, but still inconsistent. Though some of them turned out okay, like the ones shown above.
If there's any other part I can work on, please tell me yea, and I'll add 'em in :D

OH, and the new assignment, it'll be composition (movie/concert/sport) like 2 terms ago.
This time, I'm looking at whatever resources I have first, before planning out the composition.
(not gonna waste time digging for refs of sources that I don't have in hand)
I have, in mind:
1) Tron (since most of the film mags I have featured Tron, but only that I haven't watched the new Tron movie)
2) Alice in Wonderland (since I have the big children's version of the Visual Guide)
But I haven't bought any new film mags for this month, so I'm hoping they have coverage on Sherlock Holmes 2 or Black Swan or some other.
WOULD have love to do Inception, but I missed the mags' coverage on this...
I shall see what the local Borders have before I plan the composition (pencil thumbs) for it :)

Anyway, that's the last of it for this entry.
Now Ima goin' to bed.
