I choose the first option, predictably. I didn't used to think (that sounds like bad grammar but oh well) that America's racial issues were exceedingly hard for foreigners to understand, but after talking to you about it it makes sense to me that someone who's not familiar with all the cultural subtleties here wouldn't understand it very well. Actually, I get the notion that you don't understand people in general very well, because sometimes your expectations of people's reactions are very different from how they do react (though I guess I'm the same way sometimes). For one thing, LiveJournal isn't the kind of site that takes away your account if you say something mean ( ... )

Some books that might be enlightening, if you're interested:
The Autobiography of Malcolm X - I disagree with a lot of what he says but it gives you a good idea of how a lot of black people felt in the 60s.
A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn - The history of my country from the perspectives of people who aren't usually heard; i.e., most people. There's a lot about racism, which he says is a tool used by the rich to keep poor whites and blacks from forming together and overpowering them.
