Okay, here's a tip: if you're going to spend copious amounts of time on the Internet whining about how terrible the world is and how nobody cares and how people need to be more socially/environmentally/politically aware blah, blah, blah, DO NOT also spend a large amount of time bragging or gushing about personal electronics, video games, vacations ( Read more... )

I actually fell that same way, especially when it comes to celebraties.
I'm sorry, but you can talk about the rest of us saving the planet/people in it/animals around us once you've given everything you have that you don't need to a charity.
Live in a regular house and live a regular life, then tell me.

Ugh, celebrities bother me. Don't get me wrong, I think it's cool for a celebrity to quietly donate money or something without making it a publicity thing- even if it's only a small portion of what they have, they're doing it because they want to and aren't asking anyone else to do anything. It's the ones that turn it into a bunch of "look how much I CARE!" photo ops that anger me.

Unfortunately, the more I look at many of the "activists" I come into contact with, the more I fear that activism in general is well on its way to becoming nothing but a self gratifying sham.

I've noticed this with a lot of "activism" too. People just toss 10 bucks at a problem, get the free hat or whatever, and act like they're some sort of martyr for all the time and effort they spent. I'd love to see one of those sods actually take the time to reduce their resource consumption, or to stop driving their Hummer to work, and everything else. It makes me insane. x_x They just do it for the title. It's like activism has become the next Tommy-freaking Hilfiger.

The sad thing is, it isn't even the people driving the Hummers who are the worst offenders- they openly don't care. It's the people who pin all of the blame on the guys in the Hummers and then drive their Civic down the block every day to pick up stupid things like beer and chips who are the problem. It's like everyone's so busy pointing fingers that they don't bother looking at their own lives and realizing that the little things add up.

Yep, I love it. Everyone in the world should stop being so self-absorbed and become an unquestioning altruist... except me. I guess they figure that coming up with the idea is their contribution.
