I'm pretty much on the same page as you. It only took once going down 16 flights of stairs and not being able to walk without pain for a week after to make me play the cripple card at work.
We used to have fights with my son's school over fire drills. My son perceives loud noises as extremely painful. So we got "early warning and early departure" written into his IEP. They objected "what if there were a real fire" and I pointed out that autistic does not equal stupid, and if the alarm was going out, he'd be able to figure out what was going on, and go out with the herd.
