Happy 320th!

Born on this day in 1685, Johann Sebastian Bach.

Goethe once described Bach's music as "eternal harmony in dialogue with itself."

I'll be listening to my cds of the Brandenburg Concerti(directed by Martin Pearlman) tonight.

Would that be Gould's 1955 or 1981 recording?

The '81. I don't know if I've heard the earlier one, though my parents might've had it on an old Columbia Masterworks LP.

Gould's 1955 recording of the Goldberg Variations was bold and energetic, with almost feverish tempos at times. It certainly bears the mark of a somewhat eccentric protégé's first recording, and is still often the recording that many associate with the Goldberg Variations. He later came to dislike his earlier work.
