Invictus

Saw Invictus (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1057500/) on Sat night with tigerbeard, loved the film (okay, the accents slipped periodically, but I'm okay with that), as I've said elsewhere the ending was terrible ( Read more... )

As a Rugby ignoramus, what WAS the state of most of the ABs? I take it they were ill? I'm glad they showed the real people at the end too. And the amount of bitterness that Mandela does NOT have is extraordinary.

Went to see In the Loop, which was almost too real to be funny, though I did laugh a lot.

Your photo from Friday night arrived this afternoon! My phone beeped, and there it was- only 2 and a half days later?!

Enjoy the beach tomorrow- I am sure I will enjoy the afternoon at the Nova seeing The Road, and with the debate over books v film, but with it being such a lovely day forecast, part of me is wishing I could head beachwards too. Have a paddle for me, please!

I believe that in the Rugby world cup final 1995, 11 of the 15 All Blacks (ABs) had food poisoning (allegedy) but as mrstroppy said Jeff Wilson spent most of his time puking on the touchlines, so from that point of view for the ABs to lose by 3 points was pretty good.

In the Loop? I know nothing about that.

Will definitely have a paddle for you, may aim for Hampton Beach rather than Brighton.

Hope you have a good day.

I remember watching that World Cup Final and Jeff Wilson got subbed and the commentators go, "Strange to take Wilson off, perhaps he's injured?" and the camera cuts to the bench to show Wilson gloriously vomiting all over the place.

And yeah, Lomu is a fucking giant. I ran into him in the street once and thought he was right in front of me, but he was still 20m away. It was like Lord of the Rings forced-perspective shit. I would've shat myself if I was a winger and that came at me at full pace. I'd have done the old, "Oh, he did a body-shimmy and sent me the wrong way...honest..."

Re Lomu running at you at full pace: You and me both, although I'd probably be in the foetal position whimpering "please don't hurt me". He's supposed to be a really nice bloke.

With the AB's being my Southern Hemisphere team of choice, (I know, shocking for a new Australian ;) ) I was appalled that the Boks won.

I'll admit the likelihood of huge bias as a New Zealander in saying this, but I felt that win by the Springboks was also bad for rugby. I felt the same with the English victory in 1991. Both because of the style of the two teams ( ... )

I'm looking forward to seeing Invictus - thanks for the comments -things I'd have no clue about. And clearly I need to Google this Lomu person! The more I hear about rugby the more I am sure we couldn't hack it. What's Australia day?

Jumping in, because I was passing and I saw the light on question! Australia Day is a national holiday where we celebrate being Australian, and the Australians of the year and other awards for achievement are announced, and so on. The date was originally chosen to commemorate the landing of the First Fleet (from Britain) in 1788, though that has really become less relevant as time goes on. Recently it has also become known as Invasion Day, the First Fleet's arrival not being a cause of celebration for the Aboriginal people. There is on-going discussion about changing the date to something less offensive and more inclusive. But until that happens, we all continue to mark the day with a holiday (yay!); and for all the kids it's a last hurrah before the end of the summer holidays and the start of the school year.

'Enough already!' I hear you cry. I shall get on with the holiday, and levae you in peace. :)

The USA has a team (The USA Eagles) - when we lived in Northern California, over a period of time they played England, Scotland and Wales (although we were away for the Welsh game) and being rugby starved tigerbeard and I travelled to Houston to see the Boks (aka South Africa aka Die Bokke aka cheating scummy bastards sorry got a bit carried away there) play the Eagles.

Rules of Rugby Union:
The ball is oval
Pass the ball backwards
Drop kick the ball forwards
Nobody like the Boks
Most other teams don't like England or Australia either
The ABs tend to choke at big occasions
Run away if Jonah Lomu runs towards you
What happens on a rugby tour stays on a rugby tour

msb66 is a fan of rugby league which is a different game entirely.

Team Nicknames:
Australia - Wallabies
New Zealand - All Blacks
South Africa - Boks
USA - Eagles

England, Scotland, France, Ireland don't have nicknames (inspite of the film referring the "England Roses" - I ask you!)

I have 2 much better informed people on my flist mrstroppy and chickenfeet2003 if you need to know the real rules of rugby. ;)

I actually quite like the US team. Although they're perhaps not as strong as, say, Canada, they play with a lot of guts and never back down even if the scoreline is going against them. They also tend to be a quite adventurous team in how they play, so I always like to see them win.

After all, technically the USA are still the Olympic Champions in rugby...
