Matt and I went hiking on the Maclehose Trail yesterday. Navigating public transit without much guidance or any Cantonese was something of a struggle, but in the end it worked out really well. Yes, offering fake things to dead ancestors apparently dates back to the Han or pre-Han period. The Zhou's offered real things but the Han wised up and kept the expensive real things for themselves and offered fakes instead.
