So this kid was disciplined at school for "improper behavior in the home" because his school was spying on him.

The original story, from Techdirt:

And here's the full thing from boingboing.

It's since escalated with the FBI investigating now to see if the district violated wiretapping or computer intrusion laws. The district's claiming that they only use this spyware to track down stolen or lost laptops, but that doesn't explain at all how this kid's getting punished for "improper behavior in his home". There wasn't any informed consent at all either - neither parents nor students even knew before now that this software was on these school-issued laptops. The district's claiming the laptop was reported stolen, but the student claims his laptop was never stolen and that the district had no reason to turn his webcam on. The alleged improper behavior (according to the student)? Eating Mike & Ike's.

Not shitting. Apparently the district mistook them for pills and claims he was engaged in an act of drug use or selling. Regardless of whether or not he was doing something wrong, it's still kind of horrifying that the school district really thought this was a good idea. I realize that at a public school there's no expectation of privacy, but in your own home there goddamn sure is.

It's unsettling.
