I don’t even know where to begin with this update. There’s not a ton to say because this summer has been relatively uneventful, but it has been forever since I’ve updated.

I don’t think I ever wrote about orientation, which was fabulous. It was a really fun week and the other OLs were so fabulous. I loved all of them and we had the greatest times doing kareoke, stuffing folders, runnig around like crazy, putting up signs, talking about simmons, running around boston, having “Necy time,” trying and failing to watch movies, writing affirmations, eating a ton, being incredibly low functioning the majority of the time, taking pictures, playing catch phrase, making Dale proud with our speaking skills, making fun of helicopter parents, making fun of kids who failed orientation, making fun of eachother/susan/erin/michelle/officer rob, and pretty much being exhausted all the time.

I also spent a lot of time working on a crazy receipt project which was absolutely ridiculous, but it meant I got to spend a lot of time with Erin who is one of my favorite people. Like the first thing I learned about her was that Jane Eyre is her favorite book (yayy!) and she is so much fun. So that was good.

It was super exciting to meet and hang out with the incoming freshmen too. There are definitely some I’m worried about, but it was very cool to be one of the first people they met at Simmons and answer their questions and talk about Simmons a lot a lot. It was like tours times a million. I also really loved getting to know more of the Simmons staff and faculty- it makes me feel a lot more connected to the school. I know it sounds dorky, but it was very excellent.

I’m not as excited about fall orientation, but I’m sure it will still be good.

Besides that I’ve done basically nothing. Except work. A zillion hours a week. I love love love my kids though- ask me to see pictures of them. Or to tell you stories about them. They are soo cute. I’m really going to miss them when I have to go back to Simmons. Actually, last semester I missed being around kids so much that I decided to apply to a couple daycares in Boston. Hopefully something will work out and I can get 12 hours a week because then in 2 more months I can get certified as a daycare teacher, so that would be good.

Its going to be crazy though since I’m taking 5 classes (physics, biomedical ethics, your money your life, health psych and catholic theology), working 4 other jobs (giving tours, tutoring for anatomy, working at the bookstore, and volunteering at a physical therapy office), dancing hopefully 8 hours a week, and going to SGA and bio liason meetings. And maybe sleeping. My mom asked where I would be able to fit in studying. I told her sleeping took precedent and that I’d find time. There are only so many hours in a day though…

In other news things with Dan are good I think. I’m not sure, since I never see him anymore. Before he got a job he worked a zillion hours a day on his boat(which turned out waaay nicer than I expected-look at pics on facebook- I’m super proud of him- you can’t even tell that its “homemade”). And now he works 12-7(or 7:30, or 8) 6 days a week in tyngsborough, which is 35 minutes away. I’m really happy he got a job, and really really happy that he likes it there and “sees potential” in the place, but sad that I never get to see him.

The only other thing this summer(seriously- it has been sooooo monotonous) has been the dance classes at the studio. Eden taught a jazz class which kicked my butt, then I took one with Janice which also kicked my butt. Last week I taught tap which was lots of fun. People seemed to enjoy the choreography and it was a bit of a challenge without being too difficult. Then I took a jazz class with Jackie which gave me soo many choreography ideas.

I found this perfect song for lyrical(“Stay with you”-by the goo goo dolls). It’s not a typical lyrical song, but the lyrics are so so so so easy to choreograph to(“keep on turning” “leaves me empty” “run with me” “walls will fall before we do” “so take my hand now” “run forever” “I can feel the storm inside you” “desire” “burn” “streets” “twist” etc.) that I got practically the entire dance choreographed in one afternoon, and I wasn’t really even trying. I’m hoping we can use it later in the fall or in the spring. I really should be working on tap choreography- I picked a song (“The World’s Greatest by R Kelly) but I just can’t seem to get anything done. I wanted something really different from what we’ve done (traditional and loud rhythm) and I think this song will work perfectly but I just need to get my act together. I’m really excited for dance team this year- I think we’re going to have some great people audition.

I really want to take classes in Boston if I can fit it into my schedule- I need to be taking tap classes if I want to choreograph any more.

Other things I’m excited for:
Simmons sisters- I got assigned as a “mentor” for an incoming freshman, Gaby. She seems really nice and I think its going to be fun!
Living in Arnold Hall- I think its going to be a lot nicer than Simmons or Mesick halls- I’m excited to move in and set up and decorate. Plus I think Kaitie is going to be a great roommate so that’s good too.
Visiting Katie and Alissa and Kristy in their apartments. I’m hoping we have lots of fancy dinner parties.

Oh- the other thing I wanted to mention was the books I read this summer and to recommend a couple.
The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief by Francis S. Collins. One of the best science/religion books I've ever read- he did a great job putting into words a lot of things I believe. I would really like to read this again more closely.

Midwives by Chris Bohjalian- He's an amazing amazing author and this was an awesome book. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes Jodi Piccoult books(court scene style) and who can handle pretty vivid birth descriptions/discussions.

Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks- It was a novel about a city during the plague that quarantined itself and the characters and plot were really interesting, and extremely well-written.

Long for this World by Michael Byers- Really great medical ethics story about a genetic disease. I would definitely recommend this to anyone "sciency"

The Law of Similars by Chris Bohjalian- Like I said before he's an amazing writer. This is a big mix of great characters, ethics, law, homeopathic v. traditional medicine, etc. Loved it.

I didn't love any of the others I've read so far(with the exception of the Jodi Picoult books of course- read all of those) but I have a couple left before I go back to school.

I go back to school Aug. 26th- let me know if you want to hang out before then!
