So I wrote an email to McNamara telling him the situation, and since he transferred grad schools, asked for his advice. He said it was one of his biggest regrets that he took more time in grad school, that he learned more on the job than he ever did in a classroom. He said I should just stick it out and get the piece of paper. Let me just say ( Read more... )

Stay the course and get your MFA where you are.
UIUC is prestigious school and your degree will
be something you will enjoy for many years. You
are young and may have 40 or 50 or 60 years of
work ahead of you.

With the turnover in faculty I am sure there of
words of dissent floating around. Don't get sucked
up in this. Keep you own counsel and follow you plan
to completion. The grass is not always greener on
the other side of the fence.

A piece of paper. Is that what this should all really be about?

I know from my experience in NYC so far, everyone's really impressed when I say that I have my MFA, but that's about it. It hasn't gotten me a job or even in the door by simply exisiting on my resume. I've gotten jobs from people who I know and who I've met working on shows. So I mean really he's right. It's just a piece of paper and sticking it out would be the easiest way for you to get it. Here's the thing though. You've already worked successfully outside of school. The point of grad school, in my humble opinion is not just for the piece of paper but to learn the things you want to learn in an environment that's relatively risk free and safe. To experiment. To become a more educated person, a more educated designer and a more well rounded person. If you are not happy, why suffer through it? I'd rather spend another 3 years in school having a great ( ... )
