The Enemies of Reason

This is actually a reply to a post on a forum I'm a member of (albeit not a loved member, lol) but I thought I'd post it here too.

It's in relation to Richard Dawkins' latest infliction on humanity -  Enemies of Reason.

Dawkins quite clearly sees two distinct groups of people;
1. Those who believe only in scientific facts.
2. Those who believe in more.

When it comes to scientific "Fact" I always want to know this...

Who is paying the scientist?

You'd be surprised how "Fact" is a flexible thing when it comes to prefered outcomes.

It was not all that long ago that it was Scientific "Fact" that the womb was a floating device which would only be anchored in the right place if a woman wa to fulfil her "biological destiny" by reproducing.
In the light of theis "fact" It was deemed dangerous to women's health to seek academic education lest the womb float too far near the brain & damage the woman forever - FACT!

As late as the early eighties American medical science books were full of intersting "Facts" such as any African American woman below menopausal age treated for gynaecologial conditions "should" first be checked out for venereal disease as probable cause, based on nothing more than good old fashioned institutional racism thinly disguised as "fact"
So excuse me for being cynical when it comes to fact - scientific or otherwise.
