There was a time that I was doing Workshop in the Woods, and presented Elizabethan Theater, history, games, and court life but to 7th graders. Depending on the group, they were rowdy little buggers who could barely stay focused and most of whom couldn't shut up if their life depended on it. But then there were some who were totally engaged, some had had some Shakespeare presented to them so they were on a similar page. The thing that I found amusing was that they didn't seem to understand that I was an actor, not really the Earl of Oxford. That I didn't really live in England and wasn't over 500 years old...
Boy those were some interersting presentations, I got done with those exhausted. I agree with you about kids now not being given real educations, and except for those who work the fairs or are Sci/fi geeks, I don't expect that most of them really even know how to read...
