Pride Prom!

May 15, 2006 00:39

Well, Pride Prom was definitely a success, this year. :) Lots of fun was had by all. Marri and I met up earlier in the day at my place and watched some serious Last Exile, then headed downtown to the Garrick's Head Pub in Bastion Square. My mother (bless her heart) gave us a ride there so we didn't have to bother with the bus, and we were all dolled up, so it was definitely appreciated. I was in a black suit(-ish) and my brand new dress shoes, and Marri was clad quite finely in a maroon blouse and a short pinstripe skirt (with a pair of high-heeled boots). We were an interesting pair, to say the very least. So we each enjoyed a pint of the lovely chocolate beer I previously ranted about (Phillip's Chocolate Porter), and some fries and onion rings, and headed down to the bus stop to James Bay. We met up with a bunch of people already headed down there, and Pride Prom, for us, began. The prom was sommat smaller than the last couple of years that I'd gone, but that was okay; it seemed much more intimate this way, and it was still a lot of fun. Adam and I had managed, earlier in the day, to persuade his girlfriend, Whitney, to come along. So they showed up, both of them dressed to the nines, and looking adorable as ever.

This was the first time Marri had had a chance to meet her. They hit it off instantly (as Whitney seems to do with everyone Adam has just about any connection to), and we all ended up dancing together. Later on, when Adam was off signing up for Queer Idol (which he subsequently won, singing How Lovely to Be a Woman a capella - I swear, he would make a great drag queen), the two of them got to talking and the subject of birthdays came up. When Whitney said hers, Marri nearly had a kitten; it was the same day as hers. 'It was fated,' she claimed, triumphantly, afterward. ;)

For the $3.00 entry fee we got tonnes of dancing, great prizes (I won a $25 gift certificate to Roberta's Hats!!!!), and all the finger food and candy we could eat. I saw a great number of people I hadn't seen in a while, most of whom I know from high school, and got to dance with a few, too. By around eleven o'clock, though, Marri and I were pooped, so we headed out. Down to Prism we trudged, Marri finally realising that she was not wearing walking shoes. When we arrived, I paid the first cover I ever have at Prism (a whole $2, wow! XD), and we saw Natalie and her friend Colleen. We had a couple of drinks there, ogled some girls and boys, and then headed back to my place. Marri got to demonstrate her newly discovered bartending prowess as she made a grasshopper for her, myself, and my mom to share. It was pretty durned good, too. :) And then we crashed. ^^

In the morning, however, we had to go downtown fairly early. The day after was to be Mother's Day, and I still needed to grab some stuff. I ended up getting my mom a couple of gift certificates for a place downtown called Floyd's Diner. It's this little sixties joint that looks like a lot of fun, and the staff seems really friendly. It seemed like a great atmosphere, so I figured I'd take her there for that hallowed day of mothers. ;P Not before doing this, however, we went to Serious Coffee to grab some caffeine, and Marri wanted to look for a newsboy hat, so we popped into The Patch. From there we hit up St. Vincent de Paul, and I grabbed a book while there.

...a ...special book, with a rather interesting point of view. :P Well, the subject itself isn't that odd - it's about ancient Greece and the people who lived there - but the author is so terribly passionate about the subject that he speaks derogatorally about various other cultures, and completely hazes over aspects of them that predated Greece's apparent intellectual superiority. Now, this is not to say that I don't appreciate what Greece gave the Western world, or that the people there weren't of a different breed than most, but this is leaving out a long tradition of poetry and writing taking place in China, a society much older than that of Greece. Though they did not hold the same thoughts and philosophies does not make their achievements any less valid. The man, one can tell, is definitely a conservative bible-thumper (not that I have anything against bible-thumpers; everyone's got their own view), and the book was written in 1932, so I suppose it was a different thought process going into its writing and publishing. Nowadays this type of thing would hardly be shelved, is all. I'm still reading it, however; I'm sure it's got some good information in there along with the pro-Greece propaganda. ;)

After enjoying a fantastic (as always) donburi (rice bowl) at Sakura Grocery (on Yates, next to the Market on Yates, if anyone's interested), I had to head to work. It started off as any shift does, with us preparing for the next overlong and smelly eight hours, and continued much the same. But, by the time that our runner - and assistant manager - made to leave, something went awry. Needless to say, it was with said individual. Now, when we are making a staff purchase, the individual must be on the opposite side of the counter, and they must do the transaction through a person on till. This is not only a matter of security and 'control' as Scott so eloquently put it, but also a matter of respect. The money in that till is my responsibility. If my till is going to be short, or over, I want it to be because I fucked it up, not because Scott made some stupid error while typing in his own damned Timbits, which, not to mention, he shouldn't have gotten a discount for. Frankly, I don't give a damn if'n he is an assistant manager. Denying me that respect puts him below the newest of n00bs in that arena. Even our managers tell me what they're doing with our tills. Whenever Christina takes money and makes change, she lets me know exactly how much she's taking, and counts it in front of me. Because she's always been so diligent with it, I trust her, and don't even question it anymore. Scott has never done me that courtesy, and it seems he won't bother doing so in the future. When dealing with money, which I am fully and utterly responsible for while on shift, I want to make sure that I know what's going on, as anyone would. Bah. He's such a jerk. (Such a lovely ending to that rant, eh?)

Mrr. And I've got a bump behind my ear that's bothering me... It hurts to touch it, and my jaw's a little bit stiff/sore on that side sometimes. I'm going to the doctor for it, tomorrow. :P

Today was fun, though. This morning we got up to go for brunch with my grandparents at the Gorge Pointe Pub, which was a good time. My brother, though not quite old enough, wasn't questioned at the door. Hanging out with mother and grandparents? Not going to drink. ;) I'd given my mom her gift certificates and this chocolate rose that I came across while shopping, and my brother had gotten her a magnetised necklace - one of those ones that's supposed to help with aches and pains and things. She was quite happy with all that, and breakfast went well, so she was having a good day. My brother, being with Whitney, has decided that he needs to partake in a healthier lifestyle involving food, so my mom's jumping on that bandwagon and buying supplements and things like that. We stopped at this health food place on Douglas near our place, and we ended up getting smoothies as well. They put additions into them like echinacea (my mom's), Greens+ (my brother's), and flax seed oil for mine. It's supposed to be good for your skin and hair, and by the holy substance conditioner does my hair need all the help it can get! From there we popped over to Wal-Mart, looking for cufflinks, which we subsequently did not find, and I got dropped off at home. Played some Final Fantasy X (finally gotten to Sin!!!), and then headed to Timmies for a pretty decent (if rather hot from the machines, followed by very cold in the freezer, followed by hot again after my release therefrom) shift - no Scott! ;) It's been a good day. :)

Tomorrow should be fun, too. It's going to be really hot (apparently supposed to get up to 27C, or so some sources would say), and it's my Saturday, which is freaking awesome. Gonna meet up for some hanging out with a couple of girls from work, gonna get some serious Sun, and then hopefully gonna go see Kinky Boots. :) Leastways, that's the hope.

If'n you've managed to get this far, congratulations on your stamina, and why do you care about my goings on so much? ;) After all that verbosity, good day! ^^
