my brachypelma boehmei I've had for about two years now has recently had a major problem with eating. after his most recent molt I discovered he was indeed a "he," complete with hooks on his legs. ever since that molt he has not eaten nearly as much as he used to. he never gained the weight that he has post-molt in the past, he very quickly rubbed ( Read more... )

The unfortunate thing with mature males, from what I've heard, is they can last 3-5 years after they molt or just go down hill really fast. It's simply because they are mature and wanting to find a female, so they spend their time waiting and sometimes just forget to eat. I have a mature male atm, he's lasted a whole year but his eating habits have dramatically changed as well. When I first got him he didn't eat for almost a full year. (10 months if I recall correctly) before he did eat he molted. He still occasionally eats but not as much as to make me happy.

All I can suggest is continue to offer food, maybe not the most lively/quick cricket that he can catch if he is slow, and always have water for him. Tarantulas are bugs and unfortunately a hard thing to help if they are sick.

I wish thee luck, he looks rough. :C

checking on him this morning he looks much better. and the cricket I left him last night is gone. he's still skinny but not shriveled, I think he had a little dehydration going on. anyway, from what I've read apparently the males are just interested in finding females once they mature. so I wonder now, is there a place I could go to find someone who could place him with a female? I'm not interested in raising any baby spiders myself but i want to help him out.. anyway, thx for the advice so far!

Really, if he's eating, you've already gotten the better end of the ultimate molt lottery. Some males won't eat at all.

Just make sure he has water and food, and enjoy the time you have left with your guy. Heck, he may surprise you and live another year.
