Henry was just turning the corner when he saw a pensive Declan Macrae emerging from Helen’s office, closing the door slowly behind him.
“Hey, I didn’t know you were here.” Henry greeted the soldier.
Declan looked up at him, still looking nervous as the wolf approached him.
“I can only assume by your look of ‘I nearly died’, the Doc found out about you and Ash.” Henry grinned and brought Declan away from the door, starting down the hall.
“I don’t know how the hell it happened, mate…” Declan trailed off, thinking about how careful they were, sneaking around so they wouldn’t get caught.
“Dude, seriously?” Henry chuckled. “Obvious is your middle name.”
Declan frowned, slightly confused as Henry continued. “Okay, when you volunteer to join us and you two are out on assignment, you stand in front to protect her,”
“I’m-” Declan started to protest but Henry cut him off.
“If she’s injured, you tend to her first; and even when you have a second in command, you let her take charge-”
“All right, I got it!” Declan exclaimed in frustration. “So we’re a bit…obvious, but we’ve
been seeing each other for months, I don’t understand how they suddenly found out about it.”
“Dude, there are tons of cameras in this place - how the hell do you not know that?”
“I do know that, dude.” Declan replied as he got into the elevator with Henry. “And that’s another thing - if we wanted to have dinner or something, we usually went somewhere else; out of both Sanctuaries so no one could spy on us.”
“Then you don’t know Magnus or Watson as well as you think.” Henry pushed the button to go down. “Ash is the daughter to one and like a niece to the other - don’t you think they’d keep a close eye on her if she showed an interest in someone?”
“Well of course, but-”
“And to top off the list we’ve got goin’ for you, your display of affection every time you see each other is kind of a dead giveaway.” The pair walked over to Henry’s work area, with Declan in a slight daze.
“Bloody hell, I gave us away, didn’t I?” Declan said more to himself than to Henry. The wolf patted the soldier’s back and continued to laugh at the other man as he sat down.
“Well, now that Magnus and Watson know, you don’t have to keep sneaking around like randy teenagers,” Henry said, taking a battery that was charging on his work area, and putting it in a bronze-colored gun. “But think about this, could be worse.”
“Worse? How the hell could this be worse?! Dr. Magnus knows I’m…sleeping with her daughter and so does Watson!” Declan exclaimed.
Henry thought for a moment. “I guess you’re right - it can’t get worse. Sorry.”
“You’re a lot of help.” Declan kicked Henry’s desk.
“Hey, hey, watch where you kick! If that vial over there smashes on the floor, the lab goes ‘poof’.” Henry pulled the soldier away from the desk - out of kicking distance.
Moments later, Ashley and Kate came down, accompanied by Helen Magnus. Declan stumbled as he approached them, and was barely able to form a sentence.
“Ashley…Dr. Magnus…uh…well, I guess I should…no - yes.”
“Declan, Ashley has given me the details of your relationship,” Helen started, keeping her intimidating posture.
“Dr. Magnus-”
“And I’ve never approved of any man she has dated in the past, and I only have one thing to say to you…”
Declan waited for Helen throw him out of the Sanctuary, or out of the network completely.
“Gotcha!” Ashley cocked her head to the side with a grin.
“What?” Declan breathed out, not realizing he’d been holding his breath. The three women in front of him grinned and he could still hear Henry laughing at him.
“Declan, I’ve known for a while you and Ashley were seeing each other,” Helen smiled softly. “I was waiting for you to approach me, but I could tell that was the last thing you wanted to do, so I confronted you today.”
“So you knew and you just let me beat myself up over this?” he asked, feeling the blood rushing from his head.
“Well, personally I wanted ‘em to drag it out longer, but they think you suffered enough.” Kate shrugged her shoulders and made her way over to Henry. “For an authority figure, you’re a total wuss.”
Declan gave her a look, but turned back to Ashley and Helen, who just gave him a knowing, approving smile, then left.
“See, that wasn’t too bad, was it?” Ashley wrapped her arms around Declan’s waist.
“No, I guess not.” He smiled.
“Yeah right,” Henry said, putting the finishing touches on the bonze gun. “Soldier Boy was having a panic attack.”
“It wasn’t a panic attack-”
Helen smiled as she listened at the door. She almost felt sorry for Declan, listening to how poorly he defended himself. It was definitely a panic attack at the very least.
She smiled to herself as she tip-toed away from the door. ‘Well, at least he’s composed most of the time.’
