This is impossibly late and not much more than a picspam, but it's the closest thing to a review I've written in over three months, so I'm posting it anyway. :)
It rare because, unfortunately, the SV PTB think doing it would make the show seem too much like Lois & Clark: TNAOS.
Well, that's a shame. You're absolutely right that their working relationship is part of what defines them in every version Superman's story. I think TPTB's concern is unwarranted anyway, because Smallville's Lois and Clark are unique.
This was the first episode - since Ambush honestly - where I've felt fully engaged the whole time.
I thought about Ambush several times while watching Masquerade. Both episodes had coherent, satisfying storylines, and scenes between Clark and Lois that were steeped in real emotion. I definitely think they stand out as two of the best episodes we've seen all season.
I wonder if the actors anticipate BQM's episodes with the same excitement we do? It has to be more fun to come to work when you have a great script. Tom embodied Superman in every way this week, and Erica just sparkled, every time she was onscreen. They were perfect. ♥
I know a lot of people are fed up with Ollie, but I really like him in spite of his flaws, and I adore Justin. This storyline seems tailor-made for the character, and a great opportunity for some meaningful scenes between Oliver and Clark. I approve.
This episode was very pretty, especially that last scene with Clark and Lois at the DP. And no one gives us better caps than Home of the Nutty!
*This* is a ridiculously pretty review. Quite possibly the prettiest review I've ever seen.
I really like BQM too. He's not perfect (Echo, I'm looking at you), but I do think he's just a better writer then the rest of the SV crew, and I think he seems to love and value Clark much more then the other writers. And I think he has a real way with all the other characters too.
I love that Clark is out there saving the world! I would have traded plenty of the storylines we've seen so far this season to see more of the Blur in action, in Metropolis and beyond, but I'm thrilled to find out Clark has taken his heroism to a whole new level. This times a million! Every time I think of all the waste in this last season, and I think about how much time we didn't get to spend with Clark out there, saving people, being The Blur, it just pisses me off. This is such a fundamental part of who Clark is. Who Superman is. And the show should've spent plenty of time on it. Instead we got...Isis, or Harvest. Grrrrrrrr

Oh, Val, what are we going to do without this pretty in our lives every week? *sigh*
He's not perfect (Echo, I'm looking at you), but I do think he's just a better writer then the rest of the SV crew, and I think he seems to love and value Clark much more then the other writers.
I agree. I think his gift for dialogue is a major strength, and his love of humor is a perfect fit with the great comedic chemistry Tom and Erica share. But what I appreciate most is the way he sees, and portrays, Clark, which comes through not only in his writing, but in every Smallville interview he gives.
My hero worship is not blind, however. I had problems with Echo, too. :)

I know! It boggles my mind that the writers didn't want to tell THAT story.
*Clap, clap, clap* Wonderful review! Wonderful episode! I want this Clark in every episode!
Not only did we get a strongly episode for Clark, Lois was well written, Chloe was tolerable and the Ollie twist fit. We also got great performances from the cast, especially Tom and Erica.
There are so many moments that stand out for me in this episode. I laughed at the Lois & Clark scene in the barn, so well played by Tom and Erica. Tom was pitch perfect in the crime scene and daily planet scenes. He made the transformation to mild-mannered Clark Kent believable. So many good things about Masquerade!
I have watched the promos for Fortune and it looks hilarious. It is always nice to see the cast get to step out of their usual rolls. I am not sure what to expect as far as storyline but I will forever laugh when I hear someone say "Check it out, check it out"

Thanks! It really was an exceptional episode, and Clark was amazing. ♥
I loved everything about Masquerade that you did. I hope the Clark and Lois BQM gave us were a sneak peek of what we can expect from now until the series ends.
I'm sure you're watching Fortune as I type this, and I'm staying far away from everything except my own LJ until I can watch it myself, to avoid being spoiled. I hope it's as fun as it looks!

We won't even mention Supergirl and Collateral.
