Baking classes

Dec 19, 2006 00:31

It may be another spur of the moment thing, but I suddenly want to take baking classes. :9 Imagine all the pastries and desserts I could eat... I started looking for schools which cater to people with next to no knowledge about making food (and all about eating it), but then I realized how much it could cost, if I ever want to continue with it. You could learn!! If you can make chocolate chip cookies, you can make almost anything (well, sorta). The important thing about baking is to just make sure you've got everything ready~ And to make sure to follow instructions just so.

Muffins are also very easy & delicious :3

Once you work through the homemade staples - assorted cookies, muffins, etc - then it might be worth it to take a class in fancier techniques. But you're right, classes are expensive ;_; I thought about doing one with my friend, but they're like $100 for a day!

Hahaha, only my second attempt with cookies worked. The first ones were so terrible, I'll spare you the details. And I won't talk about the snickerdoodles I attempted earlier this year, that melted as it baked. I looked into classes available briefly, and I don't think it will costs me as much as $100 a day (with ingredients) but it seems like we're required to buy a couple of other essential tools. It's funny you mentioned that I should make sure I get through the "homemade staples" first. I'm thinking of taking such classes because I need help with it. XD;

But uh, you never took classes prior to making those pictures of treats you post? I would never have known if you didn't say anything. You always posts such delicious stuff.

I only show pictures of the successes XD And admittedly, I did take home econ in jr high, so I learned stuff like "spoon the flour in" etc etc. Most of it is just experience. Your snickerdoodles melted? Maybe the butter was too soft? Mine never come out as high and as cakey as the ones in the pictures, but I like chewy ones anyway XD

Oooh, if you do end up taking the class, let me know how it goes! I'm still struggling with baking (and even more with cooking), but I think I'm slightly better now that I was a year or two ago? xD;;; AND SNICKERDOODLES. Don't forget to make those. They're seriously one of the easiest cookies to make and they're delicious! :D

.....I miss my food icons.

I talk a lot XD but I don't plan on taking any until at least next summer. I'm still terrified with my first attempt with Snickerdoodles (they melted in the oven), but I like most things cinnamon so I haven't given up yet.

psst. how's life this holiday?

Hey, I just was looking for info on Scotland on LJ and I saw your post on lj_scotland from earlier in the year. My mom and I are going in March, so I was wondering, how'd your trip go, what was especially awesome, and did you stay someplace in Edinburgh or Glasgow that you'd recommend? I know the kids on the board answered some of these questions but I feel like asking someone who went as a tourist would be a good idea too. Thanks!

Hi, before I go into how much of a great time it was, I'll direct you to a link I posted under friends lock, here. (I unlocked it.) It's image intensive so if you're using dial-up, then skip it. (I meant to post a second part to it because I took that many photos.) I stayed early September, during the end of the Fringe Festival. Since it was a last minute trip, places were booked FULL and we had no choice but to remain in Edinburgh the whole time we were there, after finding a place that was still able to fit us. Depending how long you go, I would try to stay in more than one place. It may not be the same year round, but I suggest you bring a small portable umbrella you can fit in a bag. Ladies were pulling tiny umbrellas out of their purses/bags as it started to rain. Men too, from wherever they were hiding it. I'm actually just about to head off to bed right now, so I'm not able to think too clearly about what I could talk about. If you have any questions, feel free to throw them at me. I enjoyed my trip a lot, so I have ( ... )

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip, and thanks for the link! The pictures and comments are really helpful. How did you get from Edinburgh to Glasgow? There's the ScotRail, right? Is that the cheapest way, and do you just buy tickets at the station?

Glasgow looks more modernized and less architecturally/aesthetically interesting, is that true, besides things like Glasgow Cathedral? How many days did you feel like you needed in Glasgow and Edinburgh each to just sort of explore and go touristy places? Also, I know there's a very central area in Edinburgh (Princes St/Royal Mile); is there a sort of equivalent centre of Glasgow? I guess these questions are kind of vague, but I really do appreciate your help. Thanks!

We took Megabus and Citylink. I believe they've actually merged now, so taking either one or the other is the same. Tickets are cheaper if you purchased them online, and you basically show them a print out when you board the bus. They're actually coaches, very comfortable, and the trip between the two cities are about an hour each way. We had our trip very well planned out so I knew which days I would be going to Glasgow. If you don't know, you can always buy your tickets the day you go. They're very frequent, I remember the buses from Glasgow to Edinburgh being 15 minutes in between. I can't remember the price exactly, but it tends to vary depending on the time you go ( ... )
