Uh... what?

As you may or may not know, I'm a fan of the show Bones. It's gone downhill, unfortunately, and I only watch it sporadically now, but I caught a few of the more recent episodes ("The Salt in the Wounds," "The Beaver in the Otter"), and I have to say, I'm sort of disgusted at the blatant racism and Islamophobia in the show ( Read more... )

It's bugged me too. I'm watching to see where this is going; I hope they are leading up to something which exposes the problems with this. But the last episode, it was just so WTF with Hodgins in particular. It all stands out pretty jarringly.

I mean, I didn't think that Hodgins would feel that way... but given that he does, it was a very Hodgins way of expressing it. Still, pretty much everyone in the lab is highly educated, exposed to different cultures and areas of the world, and working with people of different ethnicities/religions. Even so, I can easily imagine them being prejudiced, but I think it's bad writing that none of them even make a pretense at tolerance. How can you get through that many levels of school without having some sense of shame at your own discrimination ground into you?

I've never seen the show, so keep that in mind, but the only thing I can think of is - maybe the writer is seeking to show how there is more discrimination in our current society against Muslim immigrants than against African-Americans or Asian-Americans - i.e. seeking to portray reality, with all its hairy racist bits - and is building up to some climactic scene in which the character confronts it?
