Probably better in Canada than in the UK...they UK has always been notoriously bad, at least as long as I can remember. My ex's grandmother died from a staph infection that she contracted in a UK hospital. Unfortuntely, that's not an uncommon story over there. Poor woman was pretty healthy for her age otherwise. Just terrible.

My friend Shannon's little boy was unable to get a lung transplant in the US - he was put on a waiting list, and told that he would die before it would be his turn for a donor. They did some research and were able to find a doctor who could treat them. Kyle had a transplant within weeks, instead of years. When they returned to the US, instead of being overjoyed, Kyle's doctors refused to acknowledge the treatment. Based on this, and things my siblings have told me (they live in Calgary), I think Canadian health care must be superior - at leat in some ways - to the US.

I don't know anything about UK healthcare, except from what stonybloke has told me, and it seems to be a lot waiting, and a lot like playing the Telephone Game. It's terrible to hear about your ex's grandmother. I'm sorry for your loss. *hug*

T, I don't know what the answer is here. There are millions of Americans, like me, dying for lack of health care, but socialized medicine may not be the answer either. As I mentioned above, Canadian health care seems to be superior, but I'm not sure our government is dedicated enough to follow what they're doing. America is moving more towards socialism than ever before, and I don't think that's a good thing (I honestly DON'T trust the government enough to put that much power in their hands), but the economy is not in any kind of shape to put that much pressure on the private sector. We have more homeless in our city now than we've ever seen before.

This story is tragic, and I feel terrible for this poor girl's family. Parents should never outlive their children. I can see why you immediately would have thoughts of Taryn. *long rocking hugs*

My goodness. That's beyond digusting but it is the all-too-common unspoken doctrine of socialized medicine - that is, they want you to die so they don't have to spend money on you.

What a heart-wrenching thing for that woman and child to go through.
