What is your favourite novel?

Out of curiosity.

You don't have to tell me why, though you can if you like.

So. Favourite work of fiction?

I'm mostly a nonfic reader and tend to prefer shorter works of fiction, short stories and novellas. So, I'd list "The Lottery" and "Shopgirl" high on what would be a pretty short list. :)

You know, it has been AGES since I read "The Lottery"... I think you've inspired me to seek it out and reread.

It's hard for me to name favorites, but right now I think I'd call a tie between Tam Lin and Pride and Prejudice.

Pride and Prejudice is mine, too. And I also have trouble with favourites... but P&P is a book I could read once a month and still enjoy. And want to pick up again. In another month. :)

Hm. Anything by John Sandford or PJ O'Rourke.

Ooo, good stuff... Sandford is the author of the "Prey" series featuring Lucas Davenport, plus some other one-offs - mystery, murder, crime suspense. "Rules of Prey" is the first one. Fast, crackling, funny. PJ is a Republican and a damn good writer, on politics and many other things. I recommend "Republican Party Reptile" or "Holidays in Hell" for a starter.

Jane Eyre. It would be my "stuck on a desert island book."

I admit, I asked because I am reading Jasper Fforde's The Eyre Affair at the moment, and it started me thinking about books that have this intense, powerful hold on people.

Oh, I loved that book. I'm currently on the 4th in the series. My favorite so far is actually The Well of Lost Plots. It's full of the wacky, and pretty much impossible to explain the plot to a person without them thinking you're completely bonkers.

At one point in the book, Miss Havisham and Thursday have to go to an anger management session for the characters in Wuthering Heights. I haven't laughed so hard while reading a book in forever.

I am loving it so far, too. In fact, it's basically how I've spent the entirety of my lazy Sunday. :) Some of the names! Some of the names just make me howl with glee! When Jack Schitt appeared I nearly choked on my tea.

My poor little once-upon-a-time-English-honours-brain just can't get enough of the clever!

I can never pick one. Isn't that sad?

Nah, I totally understand. I have a hard time picking favourites of anything. Especially movies. Or music! I guess it's more of a 'What really floats your literary boat' kind of question :)
