I learned something interesting in my Chaucer class today. We started talking about the new immigration bill in Arizona, and according to at least 1/3 of the people in the class, racial profiling is not racist, nor is it racist to judge someone based on their race. That's not exactly what they said, but that is what their arguments boiled down to. ( Read more... )

Um... what? That makes no sense. Plus, who carries proof of citizenship with them on a regular basis? I carry my SS card in my purse, but would that be sufficient? And I know most people don't even have that much on their person regularly. And it's ridiculous to think that police are ever going to use this law to stop white people and demand proof of citizenship -- it just won't happen.

"And it's ridiculous to think that police are ever going to use this law to stop white people and demand proof of citizenship -- it just won't happen."

This like 110%. And when someone mentioned this in class, some girl who was saying this was OK was like "Well they ought to pull over some white people to make sure that it's more balanced." But doesn't that prove that it is targeted at a specific racial group if you have to consciously say 'Hey, we're going to check a couple of white people too, just to keep it fair?'

Ughhhh there's no critical thinking left for the majority of this country, and it makes me lose that one last extremely little kernel of hope I had for humanity.

Sad to say I can think of this going down in one of my POLS classes too.

Just look at this

How can it be fair if you admit you don't know how to tell an illegal immigrant from a citizen? And they have 90 days to come up with a way to do that AND train officers in whatever *COUGHPROBABLYRACISTCOUGH* technique they come up with.
