THIS Despite Jason's initial attempts to evade her, they managed to go on a picnic just fine. JC realised early on in her interactions with the disabled ex-footballer that he had a habit of trying to keep people at arms-length so he wouldn't become a burden to them. It was something JC respected in his situation, but at the same time she knew he probably couldn't always see the forest through the trees from the other person's view point in that he just wasn't a burden when there was a warm want there to be with him. To JC, the wheelchair and disability just weren't a large factor. They came with the territory that was Jason Street and it was Jason Street she was highly suspecting she was getting a rather healthy crush on as the days ticked over. It had started with their 'one' night stand on New Years Eve. The one night turned into another, and then a day with another night. Then there was the numerous phone calls and a lunch date one work day. She was hooked and she found herself wanting to spend more and more time with him.
Of course, he was right on some level. It wasn't all hearts and roses perfection. But what new romance was? One of the nights spent together Jason's body just wasn't going to come out to play at all and they ended up watching a DVD in bed together with sex nowhere on the menu. She realised then that this wasn't just a sexual thing. She enjoyed sleeping beside him and waking beside him, and she enjoyed helping him with his morning routine which was, granted, a lot longer than most peoples. But one of the best parts of it all was when she reflexively went to help him with something, he let her. He didn't push her away in shame and didn't try to act all bravado. She offered to push him and he accepted. She held out her arms to help him from the bed to the chair, and he took them with one of those sweet smiles and quiet 'thank yous'. She was already finding herself edging into a groove with him and it was a groove she didn't want to end.
They were now lying together on a picnic blanket in a park in Jersey a short drive from Jason's home. It was cold, sure, but nothing some thick jackets and scarves couldn't fix. After sharing a nice, healthy picnic lunch together - complete with cheesecake for dessert - they had relaxed b ack on the blanket to watch the sky overhead. Jason was lying on his side in the crook of her arm and she was softly running her fingers through hair at the nape of his neck, enjoying the way his hand was resting against her stomach. "You haven't falled asleep on me, have you?" she asked, noting the silence he had fallen in to.
