On Monday i watched my first surgery, in the context of my first birth. Wheeling the baby transport device to the operating room with the two experienced nurses in our spacesuits, we didn't look like we were off to fetch a basically routine new human--we looked like a Hazmat team preparing to isolate a contaminated object. You have a good point about the hard aspects of neonatal nursing, and i don't have the benefit of great experience in any part of this field yet. I think what troubles me about this is the bigger picture of it all, beyond my opinions of one of two nurses (lots of them are sweet and wonderful--i got to shadow an absolute doll last Monday while she taught new mamas how to deal with breastfeeding difficulties and how to use carseats properly). The system and the modes of thought structuring it are what i find wack; i agree with you that community or its lack is central to the issue.
